(6) The Power of Focus: Shaping Your Mindset for Growth

In my journey as an Early Childhood Educator and now through Zenful Coaching, I’ve learned how powerful our focus can be in shaping not only how we feel in the present moment but also what we manifest in the future. This lesson is particularly relevant in both teaching young minds and guiding individuals through mindfulness and meditation practices.

Here’s why this matters:

What we choose to focus on not only determines our mood and perspective right now but also affects what shows up in our lives later. Our thoughts are like seeds; we can either plant weeds or beautiful flowers, and what we nurture is what will grow.

Let me give you a simple analogy that’s especially close to home for me:

Imagine walking into a busy kindergarten playroom. There’s a lot going on, a mess of toys scattered everywhere, a child building a block tower, a green plant by the window, the sound of laughter from one corner, and the occasional tears from another.

Now, the question is: where does your attention naturally go? Is it drawn to the mess, the noise, or the chaos? Or do you focus on the joy, the creativity, and the wonder that’s unfolding right in front of you?

This same dynamic applies to life’s everyday situations. Every moment holds both the good and the not-so-good, but what we choose to focus on makes all the difference.

If you notice that your focus tends to gravitate toward the “mess” or the challenges, pause and ask yourself: Why am I focusing on that? What else is happening in this situation that I could shift my attention to?

As an educator, I do this many times throughout the day. When a child is struggling or a classroom feels chaotic, I pause, reflect, and shift my focus to what’s going right, the child who is making progress, the teamwork being displayed, or the creativity flourishing amidst the noise.

I’ve carried this practice into Zenful Coaching as well. I often ask myself: What am I paying attention to right now? And this question has been transformative.

If you’d like to adopt this practice in your own life, here’s a small but powerful tip: set a reminder on your phone every hour or so to ask yourself, What am I focusing on right now? You’ll be surprised at how often you catch your mind drifting toward stress or negativity when there’s plenty of good to appreciate in that same moment.

This small habit can help you bring more awareness to the present, refocus on what’s working, and nurture what’s worth growing in your life. And as a result, you’ll start to manifest more positivity, abundance, and peace.

So, next time you find yourself in the middle of a chaotic moment; whether in the classroom, at work, or in your personal life – pause, breathe, and ask: What am I paying attention to? You may just find that the shift in focus is the key to unlocking greater joy and fulfillment.

Till next time…

Carolyne 💙
