Here’s something that might surprise you…
Even a toddler can practice mindfulness.
Let me explain.
Every morning during circle time, I start by greeting my little ones with a simple question: “How are you feeling today?“
At first, it might seem like just a part of the routine. But over time, I’ve realized that this gentle check-in is an invitation to mindfulness; both for the children and myself. It’s a moment to pause, to take stock of how we’re feeling, and to bring awareness to the present.
Mindfulness isn’t always about sitting quietly or meditating for long stretches. Sometimes, it’s simply about starting the day by noticing our emotions. And even before we dive into teaching about feelings and emotions in a structured way, these small morning exchanges set the tone.
I’ve seen the power of these moments. Children, even as young as two or three, can engage in mindfulness without knowing it. They pause, think, and share; whether they’re feeling happy, excited, or unsure. And in these moments, they’re learning to acknowledge their feelings without judgment, something we all need to practice.
In my work as an Early Childhood Educator, mindfulness has become a core part of how we start our day. It’s not about perfection or complex practices, it’s simply about being present, right here, right now, with what we feel.
This approach has changed how I see mindfulness. It’s accessible, simple, and something even the youngest of us can participate in. So, if you’ve ever felt like mindfulness was too difficult or out of reach, let me remind you, it can start with a single question:
“How are you feeling today?”
Mindfulness isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about offering small, authentic invitations for presence, like those we share in our morning greetings and circle time. And through these moments, both children and adults can begin to experience the power of being present.
So, I invite you to reflect: How can you introduce mindfulness into your daily routines, even in the smallest of ways?
Till next time…
With a Zenful Heart,
Carolyne 💙
